Salmo Rattlin’ Hornet 6.5 – big brother has arrived!

The year was 2015… (a brief history)

Last year Salmo took it upon themselves to evolve their popular “Hornet” line of lures, heralded by many as one of the best walleye crankbaits of all time. This evolution came in the form of the Rattlin' Hornet 4.5 – the lure that challenged status quo: small lures aren't just for small fish!

Did it work?

Many thought so. Rattlin' Hornet 4.5, with its internal rattle system, unbreakable polycarbonate lip and Internal Salmo Infinity Cast System (SICS) garnered quite a following and managed to catch a variety of species – small AND large.

You know they're on to something good when you see customer reviews like:

I used to buy all the other big brands out there, until I first tried the Rattlin' Hornet. I was amazed right away. The action is never ending. It drives all the fish out the crazy. It really attracts every species you can imagine. Pikes, perches, walleye and specially… BASS. It's my go to lure. Nothing beats SALMO RATTLIN' HORNET, NOTHING!! – Gervais Corriveau

And this:

Catches the biggest fish in any lake, a must have in any tackle boxes. Great prices and the best quality lures you can find. – K. Kostas

Oh yeah, and:

I've used the #4 floating hornet for many years fishing Walleye in Pennsylvania. Recently moved to Idaho and found even better luck with them here for big bass and pike. The new rattling version seems to wake fish up on those slow days when you can't figure out exactly what they're looking for. Salmo is the best kept secret in the fishing world.

Many proved so. But others remained unconvinced or oblivious to this small wonder's potential. Let's face it: we live in a part of the world where the ruling mantra is generally “bigger = better”!

So this year, Salmo delivered bigger.

Introducing the Salmo Rattlin' Hornet 6.5.

This short video gives a good overview of the Salmo Rattlin' Hornet 6.5 design, swimming action and performance:

The new Rattlin' Hornet was developed an manufactured in Poland by master lure designer Peter Piskorski of Salmo. Peter is considered one of the top anglers in Europe and even travels to the USA to participate in bass fishing tournaments. For Years Peter has been trying to strike the right balance between size, action and castability. He feels the new Hornet 6.5 will quickly gain traction with bass anglers and become the King of the bass crankbaits, just like the smaller versions have done in the walleye world.

Rattlin' Hornet Cutout

Think if it as the perfect crankbait design that does everything a bass anglers asks it to do. From the ground up, the lure was built to be a crankbait on steroids… I am extremely proud of this new Hornet and while it might seem from the outside like just another crank, this is indeed a lure that will change what many bass anglers will be expecting from a crankbait in the future. – Peter Piskorski

Salmo has bass anglers in mind with the introduction of the Hornet 6.5 floating/diving crankbait. They claim you'll be hard pressed to find another that casts as far or dives as steeply.

The big brother to last year's 4.5cm (2.5in) offering comes in 6 colours featuring the brand new Holo Bleak (HBL) and Holographic Blue Sky (HBS) and bringing back old faves like Hot Perch (HP) and Red Tail Shiner (RTS).

Being a larger version of the original Rattlin' Hornet, the feature list is appreciably similar:

  • Internal Salmo Infinity Cast System (SICS) – Salmo's long-cast technology for longer casts and less lure tumbling.
  • Internal rattle system – two super loud glass bead rattle chambers
  • Polycarbonate lip – virtually indestructible lip and ultrasonic welded ABS body for incredible durability catch after catch
  • Premium quality Mustad KVD Elite Triple Grip – some of the best hooks available
  • Oval split rings
  • 3D eyes

As per Salmo tradition, each lure is hand tuned and tank tested before getting into your hands to eliminate quality control issues.

How to Fish with the Salmo Rattlin' Hornet

Salmo Rattlin’ Hornet can be used in many ways and is effective in almost any situation. It’s a very versatile lure which you can use to catch nearly any predatory fish you can think of. All the standard methods of lure fishing will work the Rattlin’ Hornet.

This lure is excellent for upstream fishing, just keep the retrieve speed slightly faster than the current speed. It also works well fished downstream; just hold the lure in place over deeper spots where you expect the larger species to be.

For lakes and reservoirs, it’s great for both trolling and casting. We fish with the Rattlin’ Hornet the same way as with the majority of other floating lures – varying the retrieve speed with frequent pauses and gentle twitching with the rod tip.

Trolling the Rattlin’ Hornet works equally well, both with ‘free line’ method and with additional weight fixed a minimum of 1m (3.3ft) in front of the lure. Absolutely always make sure that your line is tight, because the vicious strike on Rattlin’ Hornet can happen just about any time it’s in the water! With the internal rattle system singing away while trolling, you can feel the vibration – – if that vibration isn't there, you know you caught something!
